ABSTRACT
Adela Florence Cory was born in England, while her father, Colonel Arthur Cory, was on leave from his post in the Bengal army. Adela Nicolson’s work, published under the pseudonym ‘Laurence Hope’, appeared in three collections of poetry: The Garden of Kama and Stars of the Desert, and Indian Love, the last appearing after her death. The attention of critics was attracted initially by the Garden of Kama’s claim to be a work of translation, its contents ‘arranged in verse by Laurence Hope’. The Academy, for instance, raises the question only to set it aside: How far these lyrics are renderings of actual Hindoo originals, or how far they may be imitations of Hindoo poetic style, only those with expert knowledge of Hindoo poetry could say.
