ABSTRACT

I have tried in vain to get off the engagement which would make it necessary for me to come to town tomorrow, and though you looked so cross at me to-day, I still think you will let me atone to myself for all this disappointment next week, when I shall “love you for yourself alone”, and endeavour to show that I am not quite unworthy of the honour which you do me by so much kindness – Pray, forgive me – I am “more sinned against than sinning”2
