ABSTRACT

Gertrude, while yet an infant, had lost her mother; and the delicate constitution of that mother, who had died of a decline, was visible in her. Though pleasing, she could not be called beautiful. She was not fair, as our northern maidens for the most part are; but her clear complexion varied with the animation of surprise, or the timid blush of emotion. Her countenance was naturally serious; her smile had, therefore, a peculiar charm. She was graceful without art; and had an unembarrassed manner. / To some it may appear a contradiction, if I add that she was reserved.
