ABSTRACT

The sun, before I had advanced three miles on my journey, began to sink beneath the horizon. I walked slowly; and, deeply ruminating on events past, scarcely knew how the present moments hastened towards the close of day. The deepening shades of twilight began to envelope the surrounding scenery; the air was sultry, the sky overcast with gathering clouds, which in a very short period of time obscured the crimson glow which spread itself along the west. I continued to tread my lonely path, till night completely wrapped every object in a temporary oblivion, when at intervals the sound of footsteps at no great distance met my ear, and roused me from my reverie.
