It happened that Mrs. Morley’s remaining companion was a man ‘learned in the law,’ of most conciliating manners, and so indefatigable in the labours of his profession, that he never lost an opportunity of urging a suit. His sagacity was equal to his industry; and at the first glance he perceived that Mrs. Morley was a fair subject for his attention.
