ABSTRACT

Every thing was prepared for Miss Gerard’s journey to Spa, when one evening, returning from the family seat in Essex, with no companion but Mrs. Morley, the chaise was suddenly overtaken by four men with crape on their faces, who, uttering the most horrid imprecations, commanded them to stop. Sophia was near fainting with terror, when one of the villains demanded which was Miss Gerard. The dusk of twilight prevented their seeing into the carriage; and Mrs. Morley, instantly suspecting some plot for the destruction of her friend, readily answered that she was the person.
