ABSTRACT

First published Edinburgh Saturday Post, 15 September 1827, p. 149. Reprinted Tave, pp. 123–5. This, and the article of 22 September entitled ‘The Standard Newspaper5, are by the same author; for the attribution for both, see Tave, pp. 127–8. The two articles reflect De Quincey’s editorial position, and continue his reports of English politics and London newspapers, in the Post. The knowledge of English people and families, and the allusions to Alexander Pope, Horace and other authors, strongly suggest De Quincey, especially in the context of the Post. Sentences starting with ‘And5 or ‘But5 would be typical of De Quincey, but are unlike the more formal styles of the other writers for the Post.
