ABSTRACT

The following passages are drawn from a fourteen-page manuscript held by the Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington, D.C. (reference Y.d. 543 (1a)). Text covers seven leaves and is paged from 93 to 106; it corresponds to parts of the November 1834/January 1835 instalments of ‘Samuel Taylor Coleridge’ (running from ‘extensive house and household’ (p. 333 above) to an unpublished ending). Passages (i) to (vi) below approximate to text that can be found on pages 355–6 above; passage (vii), which ends the manuscript, follows ‘accurately upon that point’ on p. 338 above). The numerals in square brackets below are the numbers of the manuscript pages. Most of De Quincey’s alterations on this heavily-revised manuscript do not relate to intellectual content: the passages offered here represent the more significant deviations from the published version.
