Some shared phrases and subject matter suggest that this is a discarded passage from ‘Dinner Real and Reputed’, Blackwood’s, December 1839 (see above, pp. 409–32). It was transcribed by A. H. Japp (possibly with Japp’s cuts and revisions) from a manuscript now lost and included in PW, II, pp. 244–5, in a section headed ‘Omitted Passages and Varied Readings’. This is the only surviving text.
