[Wilna in January 1813]

This unpublished fragment is held in the library of Worcester College, Oxford, as MS 128. It consists of four sheets of white paper bearing a typewritten transcript of a holograph manuscript by De Quincey, which was formerly in the same library but which disappeared under unknown circumstances at some time during the mid-twentieth century. The transcript is believed to be generally accurate, though it does not reproduce the deletions and insertions which are universal in De Quincey’s manuscripts. Page divisions are not indicated here since they bear no known relation to features of the original manuscript.
