First published in Tait’s, XIV, October 1847, pp. 690–6. Contrary to Tait’s usual practice, the essay was not printed as by De Quincey. A centred line immediately preceding the text stated that it was ‘(Continued from page 583.)’ to denote where in Tait’s Part I of the essay ended.
