ABSTRACT

The manuscript is held at Dove Cottage, Grasmere as MS 1989: 161.44. It is a single sheet of white paper, measuring 183 by 225 mm, with writing in black ink on the recto only. There is part of a crown watermark, but no date is discernible. References to ‘mounting the box’ and the repeated use of the phrase ‘too late’ suggest that this is a discarded passage from ‘The Vision of Sudden Death’. The most likely point for insertion is following the line ‘…the mail was not even yet ready to start’ (see above, p. 433).
