ABSTRACT
This chapter consists of entirely new material written for AS, originating from passing references to the Carberys in Tait’s, I, August 1834 (see Vol. 10). Masson’s edition of De Quincey’s Writings (1889–90) divides this chapter into two and renames the new chapters ‘At Manchester Grammar School’ and ‘The Priory, Chester’ respectively. There is no known manuscript of the item as printed.
