This chapter was created by piecing together material from Instructor, VI, 1851 (see Vol. 17) with material from Suspiria de Profundis published in Blackwood’s, LVII, March, June 1845 (see Vol. 15). The title ‘The Affliction of Childhood’ is taken from Part I of Suspiria de Profundis. Major transitional points between the two texts and new material written up for this chapter are signalled in the textual notes below.
