ABSTRACT

Published in PW I, pp. 306–9, under heading ‘Omitted Passages and Variations’. Japp describes it as ‘a variation on that which appeared in “Homer and the Homeridae,” with some quite additional and new thoughts on the subject.’ There seems no reason to doubt Japp’s assumption that the material was written as draft text for ‘Homer and the Homeridae’, the three-part essay which appeared in Blackwood’s between October and December 1841. The material in the present fragment corresponds broadly to the discussion of ‘The Aioidoi, Rhapsodoi, Homeridae’ in the second instalment (see Vol. 13, pp. 42–4), with which it shares certain passages.
