ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the continuation of the lecture on the 'Narrative of the Proceedings of the Messengers, &c'. by John Thelwall. The perpetual and insulting visits of the military were such as constantly to remind Thelwall that he existed no longer under what have been called the wise and humane laws of England, but that he was, in reality, submitted to all the jealous tyranny of a military government. In the lecture, Thelwall also discusses the removal of the state prisoners to Newgate. The chapter also includes Thelwall's correspondence with the Privy Council requesting restoration of his books, papers, collections of prints, and other property seized from his house.
