ABSTRACT

This chapter is a rejoinder to Godwin’s response to the ‘Preface’ to the Second Volume of the Tribune. The context for the lectures is the combustible political atmosphere immediately preceding and following the attack on George Ill’s state coach on the opening day of parliament and resulting clampdown on the reform movement. The ‘Lover of Order’ would have learned by attendance such that the reflection upon public speakers ‘bartering the tone of their own minds for the tone of their auditors,’ was by no means applicable. The Godwin's pamphlet has been noticed in a very candid and impartial way in the Critical Review.
