ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the lecture on 'Narrative of the Proceedings of the Messenger and his Attendants, relative to the Seizure of Papers, &c'. The lecture provides a personal account of John Thelwall’s arrest on the charge of High Treason in May 1794, the seizure of papers and possessions from him by government authorities and his questioning before the Privy Council. The chapter describes the circumstances that lead to the arrest of Thelwall and discusses how the papers and possessions of Thelwall were examined before the Privy Council. It also includes conversations between Attorney General, Pitt, and Lord Chancellor of the Privy Council.
