ABSTRACT

Matilda is Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s second work of fiction and her only completed novella. It remained in manuscript during her lifetime, and it exists in both rough draft and fair copy. The rough draft, entitled ‘The Fields of Fancy’, is contained in MS Dep. d. 374/2 of the Abinger Collection deposited in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, and in parts of Bodleian MS Shelley d. 1. Numbered insertions to this version are contained in Bodleian MS Shelley adds. c. 5, and in Bodleian MS Shelley d. 1. The complete and final copy, entitled ‘Mathilda’, is contained in Abinger Dep. d. 374/1.
