ABSTRACT

Aaron had just lost two of his sons. They were the elder, and the hope of his house. They appear to have been hitherto remarkable for their modesty and ingenuity, and all those qualities that flatter paternal pride, and blow up natural affection to a flame. Upon the last day of the solemn feast, with which this great occasion was commemorated, Nadah and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the Lord, which he commanded them not. In the first place, we may remember that God is our master, and proprietor, and may do what he will with his own. Secondly, it is also to be remembered, that we are sinners, and have forfeited exemptions and immunities of an innocent being. And this is a consideration of great weight. Thirdly, it is to be considered, that afflictions are the fruits of divine love.
