ABSTRACT

It was a common sarcasm thrown out by the Jews upon the primitive Christians, that they were the disciples of a crucified Jesus. The Supreme being had by a wonderful, and apparently predetermined concourse of events, forced from the judge this extraordinary declaration at the moment in which he condemned Jesus, I have found in him nothing worthy of death, he is an innocent, he is a just person. Given up to crucifixion, the crown of thorns, the sceptral reed, and scarlet robe are no longer thought necessary to render him sufficiently miserable or contemptible. When the Jewish priesthood had obtained of Pilate to put the saviour of mankind to the death of the cross; this indeed was the accomplishment of their main purpose, but it did not suffice to glut their revenge. They hold forth in one hand cruelty and torture, and in the other insult and ignominy.
