ABSTRACT
The thing that was heard of Mr. Scholes, who was a publican at Wakefield, was, that he was taken up on a warrant from the Secretary of State, and was lodged in Cambridge gaol. The Ministers refuse all enquiries into their conduct, except such an enquiry as they choose to carry on in their Select and Secret Committees. The speech of Lord Castlereagh on Lord Folkestone’s motion shews the nature of arbitrary power in its true colours. The simplicity of the Dove is to be guided by the prudence of the Serpent. Too much austerity of doctrine savours more of affectation than discretion, and drives oftener at libertinism than true reform, every one inclining to shake off the yoke when rendered too heavy.
