ABSTRACT
Extending literacy instruction before or after school, during the summer, or at-home helps ensure reading acceleration, so less proficient readers can reach proficiency and read on grade level. Out-of-school time (OST) initiatives are affordable and provide the consistency struggling readers need. They can help prevent summer learning loss when extended beyond the traditional planned academic calendar. Maintaining established teacher-student relationships and requiring parent involvement within OST programs help increase their effectiveness. Compared to the high cost of retention, OST programs cost less. Schools on a limited budget should consider partnering with community organizations, shortening program length, strategically placing trained volunteers and assistants, using technology to reduce class size, maximizing school-home partnerships, and expanding online, virtual, and distant or at-home learning options.
