ABSTRACT

In a much-read newspaper article, “Bridal Hunger Games”, the New York Times set out to explore the trials and tribulations of women seeking to lose weight in time for their wedding day. Various experts on bridal weight-loss training contributed reflections on the most effective ways for women to downsize, detox and thereby reinvent their bodies. In contrast to cosmetic surgical procedures designed to suck out and re-sculpt fat, which always require both “down time” and a recovery period on the part of the patient, Diet Tube requires of its users only that they do not eat (apart from, perhaps, the consuming of green tea). In a world of endless corporate lay-offs, institutional off-shorings and company reorganizations, people are scrambling to adjust to new definitions and experiences of self, relationships, intimacies, work and many others.
