ABSTRACT

The focus of the analysis in this chapter is placed on considering how Hair has been reimagined both on stage and screen. Offering a reading of the 1979 film release, directed by Milos Forman, the chapter highlights ways in which the material has been adapted for screen, whilst considering its potential reception in the context of the post-Vietnam War era. Discussing both the 2009 Broadway revival and the 2016 UK revival of Hair in the context of the Obama and Trump presidencies allows for an exploration of how the musical and the score can be reimagined in different on-stage contexts, revealing how Hair and the messages it communicates can continue to resonate 50 years after its initial release.
