ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the most influential philosophies that have shaped the way we think and feel about the care of young children and how this has manifested itself. It looks at how settings can create a cohesive model that every member of staff working with the youngest children can both agree on and adhere to whilst maintaining the highest level of care for the babies they look after every day. The concept that early education has an impact on future development is largely known, and good quality care and education for young children has many benefits for future outcomes. The chapter presents case studies from CurioCity Childcare and Wally's Day Nursery that demonstrates how various approaches and underpinning theories of learning and development have been embedded into all aspects of the setting, from the focus on developing the environment and the interactions that take place to the variety of resources that they provide.
