ABSTRACT

This chapter looks in depth at the environment, the practical aspects that need to be considered and the differences that exist between rooms for babies and those for older children. It explores the importance of providing an environment that encourages the development of creativity and how it is subsequently explored by the babies who use it and some of the disparities between what we think a baby room should look like in theory or what we would like it to look like and the practicalities involved in setting up, designing and using a baby room. The age of the children in the room will determine the type of provision that is needed for more practical aspects of the baby room, such as mealtimes, in terms of the equipment and furniture. Babies should be seated appropriately in small groups to encourage communication and language between them and a familiar adult.
