ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the importance of the outdoors and some of the influences that have shaped the way parents offer outdoor play to young children. It delves into the crucial role that parents play in their child's experience of nature and the perception children develop as a result as well as the importance of practitioners in sharing with children the wonders of being outdoors and providing a wealth of experiences that are appropriate for babies. As Laura from Stone Hen Childcare suggests, ‘being outside gives babies a whole new experience to our natural world. A chance to see and witness, first-hand the magic of the world around them, providing a pure sense of freedom to explore and investigate’. As with many aspects of baby care and supporting the development of creativity within it, the practitioner's role in facilitating and respecting the child's interests is crucial.
