ABSTRACT

The Jungian coach thinks symbolically and encourages the coachee to look at his or her dilemmas through a symbolic approach. The trademark of symbolic thought is the language which uses words or images to express concepts. Symbolic thought is a human ability to observe a situation, event, relationship, or object; analyze and comprehend that referent, distant cognitively and emotionally from that specific referent; and make a generalization so that the specific matter will be granted with wider significance. In symbolic thought one should be open-minded to mankind’s wisdom, which already possesses most of the human beings’ combinations of interests, connectedness, intrigues, and life dilemmas, all of which are coded in human heritage through mythologies, stories, legends, and fairy tales. The ability to use a symbol as a key for symbolic thought will cause a change in the client’s attitude toward the dilemma.
