ABSTRACT
This chapter covers the Kennedy administration’s establishment of channels of communication with the Cuban government as a consequence of the willingness expressed by the Cuban authorities to discuss the possibility of resuming diplomatic relations with the U.S., and the results of the efforts of lawyer James B. Donovan. These U.S. channels consisted, among others, of contacts between the Ambassador William Attwood and the Cuban delegation at the UN, and between the French journalist Jean Daniel and Fidel Castro. The chapter describes the nature of the communication, and its development, as well as the unexpected and rapid termination of these channels as a consequence of the assassination of President Kennedy on November 22.
