ABSTRACT

We can best frame the issues that will concern us in this chapter by summarizing the main features of the account of “obligation” that we have given to this point. “Obligation” is used to guide conduct where there are precept or regulation-type rules that require or prohibit specified forms of conduct that are thought to be of fundamental importance in the society or social group. These rules have social standing. It is not open to B to reject or refuse to conform to them without excusing or justifying his decision to other members of the society. If he does so, or if his excuse or justification is judged to be inadequate, he is subject to blame and perhaps to sanctions.
