ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how one can put in place simple changes to create a sensory-supportive environment for the individual and strategies to support the hyperreactive and hyporeactive child. The importance of providing an enabling environment is stated in the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage where it says: Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers. Sometimes it is impossible to avoid an environment or situation that one know will be difficult for the child to cope with and could result in their hypersensitivity causing distress. Ensure that people are aware that the child is undersensitive or hyporeactive and may not respond to a sensory stimulus, or have a delayed reaction. Safety is therefore a paramount consideration.
