ABSTRACT

Traditionally, the education of young children has recognised the importance of providing a wide range of experiences and activities to encourage children to explore using their senses. The Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework has the guiding principle that children learn and develop in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs. This chapter presents fun activities that are designed for exploration and sensory play. They are all activities that one have used with children, both in an educational setting and at home. The child should be encouraged to make choices and express preferences. If a child shows that they have lost interest or do not like the activity, either through speech or body language, the teacher should stop. Creating boards for different situations may be helpful. The choice board can be particularly helpful if the child begins to recognise when they are getting overexcited and need to find a strategy to help them calm.
