ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 describes the importance of PHCPs’ worldview and values as a foundation for authentic engagement with parents of seriously ill children. The way in which an encompassing worldview and one’s values guide every interaction is highlighted. As the chapter acknowledges, worldviews can be radically different from one another, but the commonalities in worldview and values across those PHCPs who were recognized by parents and colleagues as exemplary also can be identified. Sources of worldview, values, and commitment are discussed. How exemplary clinicians interact as a result of having this similar worldview and values is clearly described, and quotes from the foundational study are used to support practical examples of exemplary interaction. Respect for all persons, a valuing of diversity and social justice, a commitment to engaging in family-centered care as they strive to know parents as people, and a desire to maintain personal and professional integrity are all described as aspects of exemplary interaction. The chapter concludes with questions that encourage the reader to reflect on how they too can achieve their career vision and be an exemplary clinician.
