ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the findings on family literacy programs that have demonstrated success, particularly those that served diverse cultural, social, and language groups, including English language learners. Along with outlining successful outcomes such as participant involvement and retention, the chapter examines the characteristics of such programs, including program length and literacy engagement practices, among others. Specifically, three family literacy programs are highlighted: Family Literacy: Aprendiendo, Mejorando, Educando (Learning, Improving, Educating, Project FLAME), the Glades Family Education Program, and Parents as Literacy Supporters in Immigrant Communities (IPALS). Implications for the future design of family literacy programs are provided. Overall, this chapter focuses on general program design features that facilitate family literacy program success.
