ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 considers the term reflection and its relevant key terms, principles, and frameworks that have been described or about which research has been conducted. The chapter seeks to clarify various related concepts, such as metacognition and self-regulated learning, and how they are connected to reflection and language learning. The chapter further lays the groundwork for the study and practice of reflection by looking through the literature across disciplines in order to provide a historical context for its examination. It also takes stock of what was established in the previous chapter, cuts through various terminologies, and relates the role of reflection specifically to the learning process. The chapter moves from a broad view of learning and learning theories to the principles and theoretical perspectives associated with learner reflection.
