ABSTRACT
This final chapter discusses the right to an appeal following a conviction. Proper objections in the trial court are emphasized as a way of preserving the record for appellate purposes. This material notes that subsequent appeals are based on the discretion of higher appellate courts to hear a case and details the role of state courts of appeal. The interface of state appellate courts and the Supreme Court of the United States and how they interrelate is discussed. Case law demonstrates that free legal counsel for indigents for the first appeal is a constitutional right and that collateral attacks on a decision require that the litigant have exhausted all existing appellate and statutory remedies.
