ABSTRACT
1 The type of bibliographic tool for which guidelines are provided in this publication is most frequently described generically as either a “union list” or a “union catalogue”. Since use of the word “list” in the past has often resulted in the production of tools with inadequate bibliographic detail to perform even the basic functions, and since this term itself is becoming obsolete in the automated environment, the description union catalogue is to be preferred, and is used consistently throughout these guidelines.
