ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 starts with an introduction of the authors’ personal background and how he came to do the research that the book is based upon. This is followed by overviews, firstly of the book’s main settings in Rio de Janeiro and one of its areas of favelas named Complexo da Maré renowned for social movements, then secondly of four empirical and conceptual points of focus that are discussed throughout subsequent chapters – protest, literacies, trajectories, and technologies. Drawing on terms from the New Literacy Studies, the books’ central concept of protest literacies is explained introductorily. Drawing on terms from Social Movement Studies and historical studies of social movements, the overarching periodization of the book from 2006–2016 as a particular cycle of contentious politics and social protest in Rio de Janeiro is also introduced.
