ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 presents an overview of the colonial and post-colonial socio-anthropological and ethnographic understanding of Indian village life, conceptual and methodological limitations of the empirical studies and also their failure to draw a comprehensive historical picture of Adivasi villages in India. The chapter emphasises the need to study the process of village making as elaborated by the remaining six chapters and highlights the purposes the book may serve.
