ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 focuses on the important role representations play in effective instruction of ratio and proportion concepts. The chapter specifically examines ratio tables, tape diagrams, double number lines, coordinate planes and equations through the lens of mathematics content and effective instruction. Chapter 2 also explains why students should have rich opportunities to solve qualitative reasoning problems. These are problems in which no numerical values are assigned to the quantities in the problems. In addition, the chapter discusses the importance of students distinguishing between proportional and non-proportional situations.
