ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 examines foundational mathematics concepts related to percent. This includes research-based strategies to help students develop understanding and flexibility when they encounter percent situations in school and in everyday life. Included in the chapter are discussions about building on students’ intuitive sense of percents and benchmark fractions and percents. Also included are examples of how visual models, percent tables and mental calculation can help support student understanding and flexibility. The chapter also includes a section on percent increase and decrease. Embedded throughout the chapter are examples of misconceptions and common errors students make that might interfere with their learning of percent concepts or solving percent problems.
