ABSTRACT
This book makes the case for an urban resilience reset, examining the challenges of building resilience to climate change, particularly in cities of the Global South. Critiquing existing conceptualisation and implementation of resilience-building across five key domains, we call for a set of pivots for thinking and practice, with the aim of ensuring that cities of the Global South not only function but flourish despite multiple interacting shocks and stresses. After setting out this agenda, this chapter considers the resilience reset in light of the interaction of complex risks, as highlighted by the emergence of and response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The importance of the normative and political dimensions of building resilience are emphasised: resilience to what, of what, for whom and by whom? Finally, the chapter considers future directions for enquiry that can develop the pivots, including political economy, equity and justice, and decolonisation agendas.
