ABSTRACT

This chapter consolidates the ideas and arguments presented in previous chapters about the social nature of money and the most important innovations in the ecosystem of electronic and virtual money, cryptocurrencies, and alternative finance. It discusses the key limitations and strengths of these proposals, in relation to the fundamentals of a new parallel currency, which represents a renewed conception of money based on the idea of reciprocity and social utility. This chapter discusses the scope for a profound monetary change in those sectors of activity that remain excluded from the market and the monetary economy.
