Introduction

This chapter introduces the debate on the spirit of capitalism, which is the general framework of the book. It illustrates the scope of analysis—the idea of a market as a place for mutual assistance, from Thomas Aquinas to the eighteenth-century civil economy—and its aim, which is retracing the features of the Mediterranean spirit of capitalism. Some methodological remarks and the outline of the book conclude the Introduction.
