ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter lays out the groundwork for the central question of the book: how did a relabelled disease category, within a decade, result in billions of funding being directed towards a previously ‘neglected’ issue, with global commitments for control, elimination, and eradication? It begins with an overview of listing neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and then explores the ways in which NTD research has been neglected and ends by setting out the structure of the book by chapter.
