ABSTRACT

Perhaps the easiest way to illustrate how the 3Ds interact to produce global leaders is by repeating an analogy given to us by one of the European managers we interviewed. Whereas DeoxyriboNucleic Acid (DNA) focuses exclusively on the transfer of abilities from one generation to the next, inheritance is about the transfer of opportunities. Often it is impossible to separate DNA from inheritance in determining leadership success. Sam Tan commented on the need for a strong network of relationship slung employees.: A strong global leader creates value for the organization when he is able to solve complicated, difficult problems. For some of our global leaders, drive had roots in personal feelings of inadequacy and the need to prove themselves. Creating global leaders is certainly not an easy task. If it were, there would be a lot more global leaders moving their companies forward.
