ABSTRACT

Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and family therapy as used in the treatment of schizophrenia. Token economies as used in the management of schizophrenia. The role of the family was looked at as a risk factor for schizophrenia and also as playing a part in the relapse of those suffering with schizophrenia; additionally the role of cognitive dysfunction was considered as a potential cause of the symptoms of schizophrenia. The issue of cultural bias is something that occurs with alarming regularity in various areas of psychological research. The effectiveness of psychological therapies for the treatment of schizophrenia is likely to be hampered by the lack of insight shown by sufferers, and this is nowhere more true than in the use of CBT. Family therapy itself has been the focus of meta-analyses and F. Pharoah et al. conducted one such study to look at the effect of the therapy on relapse and hospitalisation rates.
