ABSTRACT

Equity theory proposes that the distribution of inputs and outputs is both relative and subjective, so the contribution of each partner doesn’t have to be exactly the same. One person may have a job that requires them to work long hours and be out of the house all day; the other may have to be in the house for most of the day, doing other forms of work; and, as long as each partner regards it as fair and reasonable, then that’s fine. An issue that raises questions about the usefulness of equity theory is whether the relationship between equity and satisfaction is the right way round. The theory is suggesting that equity leads to satisfaction but it could be that satisfaction in a relationship encourages partners to act in a more equitable manner in their relationship.
