ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the profound changes in China’s social structure of reform and opening up from four aspects: population structure, employment structure, urban-rural structure, and structure of social strata. The research group of Institute of Sociology conducted an investigation and made a classification of 10 strata. After publication, some people were in favor of it and some raised doubts. There were also people who proposed another method of classification. Research on this issue should continue to be carried out. The structures needing to be adjusted include the current land system, the household registration system, the personnel system, and the social security system. The structure of social strata is the core of all social structures, since all social structures are reflected in the structure of social strata. The social structure and the economic structure are not yet adapted to and coordinated with each other. This is the structural cause of many economic and social problems.
